September – Student Feature

OSS has long been home to a vast array of talent, whether that be in math, science, social studies, English, sports, and art. Recently, students in AP 2D Art had their impressive skills displayed in an Art Feature for September.

Take, for example, some skillful drawings from Sophia Hosein. Sophia says in an interview that getting the life of a drawing should be the motive behind making art. She adds that there was no specific artist or art piece that got her into art in the first place, and that she naturally got into art. She also mentions that she prefers a relaxed and stress-free environment, as it helps to bring out the best in her, as she can think freely. Furthermore, she mentions that she would want to continue art programs and art competitions in college. Below are some examples of her artwork.

Another student excelling in AP 2D Art is Sanjana Thomas. She says the thought process behind her pictures is combining Pinterest pictures with her own thoughts to create exemplary drawings. She says that fellow student Sophia Hosein had a big influence on her drawings by introducing her to mushrooms. She made many mushroom-themed art works

She says she works best when she puts on music as she does not like outside noise while drawing and finds that this is best for her as it gives her the ability to just focus on the piece she is drawing. Like Sophia, she plans to continue art in college in some form through competitions and courses.

11th grader Jada Sejour is another student who has been excelling in AP 2D Art. She says the thought process behind her pictures is to visualize what she wants to draw and to make bullet points to refer to for her drawing. She says that visual images before the actual drawing help her to make the real drawing. She mentions that her inspirations are Mexican artist Frida Kahlo due to her renowned self-portraits and French artist Claude Monet due to his continuing to paint, even after severe vision loss. She says that knowing that not everything is final helps her to understand what elements can be incorporated or removed in her drawings to improve them. She says that in the future she’d like to start a business where she would incorporate art based on her background, ideals, and culture.

11th grader Xavier W. is another student who has been excelling in AP 2D Art. He says the thought process behind his pictures, like Sanjana, is to get inspiration from Pinterest, but he also states watching shows and movies also helps him gain inspiration to create. He says that he was inspired by anime artists who have a very unique drawing style. He also thinks that listening to music helps him get in the zone for a specific art drawing; his drawing’s mood is often based on the song’s mood. Finally, he plans to go to art school to improve on his skills, and he wants to diversify his artistic abilities even more through different mediums of art.
