September – Club Feature

(Orlando, Fla.) SGA is a student-run organization that is responsible for almost all of OSS’s events. This ranges from homecoming to even our school’s spirit week. Armando Collazo de Jesus, Olivia Jordan, and Azaan Mithani are just some of the few who help SGA run smoothly.

In the near future, students can look forward to homecoming and spirit week. Something new this year, according to Oliva Jordan, is disposable cameras being added to this event.

When asked by Zeynep Cetin, “What do students have to look forward to this upcoming school year?” President Armando stated, “Something we have planned […] is our orca-to-orca peer program. It is kind of under wraps. Essentially what we are going to be doing is […] set up a school-wide mentorship program ranging from freshmen all the way up to juniors with the potential of involving seniors.

Vice President Azaan also mentioned an “OSS Olympics coming up; we’ll be having a bunch of different students competing in a bunch of different sports for our school.” Additionally, some of our student athletes might be featured.

All of these events wouldn’t be possible without all of the planning, coordinating, and fundraising behind the scenes, but how does everything actually come about? Armando, Azaan, and Olivia all mention what a regular meeting looks like, what some of their responsibilities are, and how some of the planning works.

As SGA president Armando states, “A lot of what I do is working with grade reps and doing everything I can to be the best president and reaching out to as many students as possible and getting them involved in the school decision process.”

Being the vice president, Azaan facilitates planning for activities like homecoming and powderpuff. He also works to keep the meeting organized. He makes sure each and every one of SGA’s team members has their own input.

Our secretary Olivia takes notes during the SGA meetings, refines and posts them, and manages the calendar.

On a regular basis, “ a typical SGA meeting is on Wednesdays during club time and is sometimes shorter or longer than 30 minutes. We go over upcoming events in the near future, and we make sure that each and every small little problem is worked out as well as funding” (Azaan Methani).

For example, spirit week came about and was decided by SGA being split into sections while troubleshooting the best possible options.

This is just a small outlook into the inner workings of our student government, which does an incredible job in making a difference in our student community.
