November – Sports Feature

This year marks a major milestone as our school launches its first ever girls soccer team, the players open up about their experience, challenges and team spirit.

Shivani expressed to Ayse that since joining the team she feels supported and the team’s positivity and strong coaching makes the experience better. Shivani also stated being on the team “feels great and exciting and is a great community to be around”. She’s glad the girls finally have an opportunity to represent their school. Leilani interviewed Gabi, Eman, and Aubrey. Eman and Gabi stated that being part of the first girls soccer team at OSHS is great and feels amazing. Aubrey also stated that it feels very exciting and cool.

When asked about the biggest struggles for them being a girl in sports, they shared their thoughts. Gabi stated that, “being a girl you get put a lot of expectations on you”. “The biggest struggle is being judged just from being a girl, but later on you’ll learn to just ignore it” says Shivani. 

The girls remarked teamwork, confidence, and thinking positively is key to playing well. Aubrey stated that staying hydrated and having a good mindset is important. Shivani says “The most important thing is hyping each other up and being confident” she also explained if you think lowly of yourself you won’t do as well. “Its also good to know stuff about the opposing team and their tactics”. 

With their confidence, teamwork, and determination, these girls are making history. As being the first girls soccer team at OSHS they’re setting a strong legacy for future players. With every game it’s more than a game, they’re inspiring future generations of girl athletes.
